The return of the cheetah to India

The world’s fastest land animal will make a comeback in India, nearly half a century after it was  extincted in the country by native Hunters.

The government will spend 30m rupees ($0.6m; £0.4m) to restore  two scacturies in Madhya Pradesh and  Rajasthan the sites where these spotted cats will use as potential home  before the animals will be imported from Africa where the vast majority of the 10,000 cheetahs left in the world are.

The return of the cheetah also promises to resurrect grassland and open spaces in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh encroached upon over decades by humans. Experts estimate that about 100 communities, involving tens of thousands of people, would need to be relocated to make way for the cheetah in other to restore habitat and prey base, and reduce the scope for man-animal conflict which caused the extintion of the large cat in the past centuries

With the return of the cheetah, India will be the only country in the world to host six of the world’s eight large cats and the only one to have all the large cats of Asia,” said  MK Ranjitsinh of Wildlife Trust of India .
